How We Rank: Methodology (2026)

bestmalaysiaplaces.com is an independent guide. Nobody pays to be listed or ranked.

How a place gets in

The score (0–100)

A consensus of editorial "best of" lists, Google rating weighted by the log of the review count, awards (UNESCO World Heritage, MICHELIN Keys for hotels, national tourism awards) and how long the place has been well known. Ties go to the higher tier. We re-check every place each quarter (1 January, April, July and October).

Hibiscus tiers

We keep at most about three Legends per category, so the top tier stays meaningful.

Muslim-friendly information

We only say "halal" for food outlets with a confirmed JAKIM certificate. Hotels and venues we have not verified are described as "pork-free". "Surau" means a prayer room on site or right next door.

Links and photos

We only link to official websites and social accounts. Images are shown only when they are hosted by the place itself or come via the Google Places API with the contributor credited.

Safety

Waterfalls can flash-flood after rain upstream. East Coast seas close for the monsoon (about November to March). Mount Kinabalu, Gunung Mulu adventure caves and many national-park trails require permits and licensed guides. Check jellyfish and rip-current warnings at beaches, and wear leech socks in the rainforest.

Spotted a mistake? Tell us via the contact form (form only, no email).

☪️ Halal status changes. For food, look for a valid JAKIM certificate (check at myehalal.halal.gov.my). Hotels and venues we have not verified are described as "pork-free", not halal.

📷

Where a place has no official photo, we show one image from Google Maps via the Google Places API, credited to the contributor. Google photos are never reposted to social media.
